A tragic accident unfolded on Florida's Turnpike yesterday when a man attempting to cross the busy highway was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer. The Florida Highway Patrol, recounting the incident to WSVN, stated that the collision occurred near SW 8th Street, resulting in the pedestrian's death from his sustained injuries.
Traffic on the southbound section of the Turnpike near the site of the accident was significantly disrupted following the event. Authorities were compelled to shut down four lanes during their investigation, which served only to briefly but deeply scar the rhythm of the day's travel. All affected lanes have since been reopened, according to NBC Miami.
The identity of the man who lost his life has not been released as of the latest reports. He was pronounced dead at the scene, after attempts to cross the Turnpike led him into the path of the oncoming tractor-trailer. The Florida Highway Patrol has yet to provide further details surrounding what may have prompted the pedestrian to cross the highway on foot.
The Florida Highway Patrol and emergency response teams attended the scene, conducting a thorough investigation while managing to quickly clear the lanes and to restore the flow of traffic.
