A man was killed and three others were critically wounded in a mass shooting early Sunday in Chicago's River North neighborhood, according to police. The burst of gunfire shut down a busy stretch of downtown nightlife while officers combed the area for shell casings and other evidence. Authorities said the shooters took off before officers arrived, and no arrests had been announced.
How police say it unfolded
According to NBC Chicago, the shooting erupted near North LaSalle Drive and West Hubbard Street around 2:35 a.m., when four people getting into a vehicle were approached by four men who opened fire, then fled. Officers found multiple victims at the scene and rushed them to nearby hospitals. Detectives said they were pulling surveillance and cellphone video as they searched for leads.
Club fight reported by witnesses
Some witnesses told CBS Chicago that the gunfire followed an altercation outside a River North nightclub and that a group had been thrown out shortly before shots were fired. Neighbors interviewed by the station said the nightlife corridor has felt less safe lately and voiced frustration over repeated incidents. Detectives are working to square those street-level accounts with the physical evidence at the scene.
Victims and hospital status
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the man who died was 34 years old and had been shot multiple times. The three surviving victims - ages 36, 43 and 35 - were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and listed in critical condition. Police described injuries that included gunshot wounds to the chest and back. Authorities have not released the victims' names while they continue notifying relatives.
River North's recent violence
The block has seen other late-night shootings this year, including a deadly drive-by outside Artis Restaurant in July that left four people dead and more than a dozen wounded, as reported by CBS Chicago. That history has heightened tensions among residents and small-business owners, who say nightlife safety remains a serious concern. City and police officials are again facing calls for more visible patrols after the weekend violence.
Investigation continues
There were no arrests as of Sunday, and detectives were asking anyone with information or video to contact investigators, NBC Chicago reported. Area detectives are canvassing nearby businesses for surveillance footage and reviewing cellphone recordings from bystanders. Chicago police said they plan to release additional details as the homicide investigation moves forward.
