San Francisco's cherished Japantown is hosting a massive event this December, welcoming Godzilla fans to a unique celebration called Godzilla's Seven Decades. The Japantown Community Benefit District is producing the festivities, which are set to roar over two consecutive weekends, starting on December 6 and 7, followed by December 13 and 14. It promises a compelling blend of art, film, and activities steeped in the culture of the iconic kaiju.
At the heart of the event is the “Godzilla Through Our Eyes” art exhibit, which showcases works from seven local artists inspired by the cinematic behemoth. According to Godzilla, the exhibit also includes a timeline of Godzilla's extensive film history and a collection of vintage movie posters, housed at the New People SuperFrog Gallery on Post Street. As a nod to San Francisco's storied affection for cinema, the community will be treated to a free outdoor screening of "Shin Godzilla". The event is set under Japantown's Trellis Gate, with moviegoers invited to settle in with their chairs and blankets on Saturday at 6:45 PM.
The celebration extends beyond visual arts with a new installation guiding visitors across Japantown. A series of plaques has been installed, offering short essays that delve into the different eras of Godzilla's storied legacy. This walkway, in essence, allows fans to traverse through seventy years of kaiju lore. A "stamp rally" has also been incorporated to benefit local commerce, according to a social media post from SF Japantown. Participants who spend $100 or more in one day can collect stamps and perhaps win Godzilla-themed prizes, thus encouraging the support of the district's small businesses.
To sweeten the deal, those approaching the Japan Center East Mall during the event will hear the unmistakable roars and footsteps of Godzilla, adding an audio element to the celebration. Inside the mall, two murals await fans looking for the perfect photo opportunity. With partners including New People Inc., Japan Center Malls, Japan Center Garage, the Japantown Merchants Association, and others, this event stitches together the local community in honor of a global pop culture icon.
