The San Diego community of San Ysidro has recently opened the doors to The Iris, a new affordable housing complex designed to provide residents with low incomes much-needed homes. According to a release from the County of San Diego, the development comprises 100 apartment homes, ranging from one to three bedrooms, designed for individuals and families earning between 25 and 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Delivering amenities to residents beyond the walls of their units, The Iris boasts a community room, office space, a laundry facility, and a courtyard play area, offering outdoor seating for kids flying their kites. Realizing the importance of accessibility, the complex is situated near a trolley stop on 1663 Dairy Mart Road and within proximity to various community services, including a health clinic and an elementary school. It also includes 50 units adapted for individuals with mobility challenges and five units for those with hearing loss.
With a strong commitment to serving those in need, The Iris allocates 15 supportive housing units for previously homeless individuals. County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre praised the project, saying, "I am proud to support The Iris at San Ysidro because it reflects the kind of thoughtful development our region needs." She highlighted the project's broad goals, focusing on sustainable, connected housing integrated into the community fabric, as per the County of San Diego.
Financing for the endeavor is secured through a combination of public and private partnerships, including a $5 million investment from the County's Innovative Housing Trust Fund (IHTF) and $6.5 million from the No Place Like Home (NPLH) funds, as reported by the County News Center. Stated by the County of San Diego, "County Behavioral Health Services will also provide supportive services to residents for the next 20 years," ensuring a system of sustained support for The Iris's beneficiaries.
