Chaos ensued on the highways as two separate semi-truck crashes on Sunday disrupted traffic flows in Illinois and Michigan. In suburban Shorewood, a jackknifed semi-truck brought eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 to a standstill near the Interstate 55 interchange, NBC Chicago reported. Illinois State Police indicated that one westbound lane was also affected. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries, and crews have attended the scene for investigation and cleanup.
Meanwhile, in Metro Detroit, a semi-truck crash on Interstate 75 left the driver and his adult passenger with non-life-threatening injuries, according to CBS News Detroit. The crash occurred near Outer Drive / Exit 42 in Lincoln Park. Taken to a hospital were all occupants of the vehicle, including the 32-year-old driver and one adult and three children passengers.
Authorities have issued reminders in the wake of the accidents to exercise caution while driving. "Unfortunately, we continue to see drivers going too fast on wet roadways," said Michigan State Police F/Lt. Mike Shaw, warning against excessive speeds. Road conditions at the time were slippery, and the driver involved in the I-75 crash is said to have been driving too fast, losing control of the vehicle and causing it to strike the median wall. This unfortunate incident sent debris flying into both directions of the freeway.
Both Interstate 80 and I-75 have since reopened, with traffic resuming its normal pace after the incidents. While the Illinois lanes were cleared promptly, according to Total Traffic, the Michigan Department of Transportation reported that northbound traffic on I-75 began moving again around 11:09 p.m., and the southbound lanes were clear by 1:19 a.m. Through these incidents, the delicate balance between the urge to reach destinations swiftly and the imperative to safeguard human life, refreshes its hold on our collective consciousness.
