In a federal indictment unsealed earlier, the Department of Justice charged five men associated with "Greggy's Cult," an alleged child exploitation ring operating on the internet. As reported by the Office of Public Affairs, these individuals are facing a litany of charges, including running a child exploitation enterprise and conspiracy to produce and distribute child pornography.
The accused, identified as Hector Bermudez, Zachary Dosch, Rumaldo Valdez, David Brilhante, and Camden Rodriguez, ranged in age from 22 to 29 and were apprehended in various states across the country. Using Discord servers to facilitate their scheme, they allegedly targeted vulnerable children and adults. "No child should ever be terrorized or exploited online," said Attorney General Pamela Bondi, highlighting the commitment of the Justice Department to safeguard children against such atrocities.
According to an indictment from the Eastern District of New York, the group used gaming platforms, such as Roblox and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, to find their victims. The alleged acts include capturing images of the victims' sexual exploitation and engaging in a range of demeaning and coercive activities. In a coordinated fashion, the group also extorted victims by framing them as pedophiles or sending them malware.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. for the Eastern District of New York described the conduct as "monstrous," stressing the importance of parental vigilance in the digital age. "The defendants' depraved conduct," he stated via the Office of Public Affairs, "is monstrous and will be vigorously prosecuted." Alongside, he strongly urged caregivers to discuss the dangers of online communication with their children, aiming to prevent them from falling prey to such exploitation.
The case forms part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative designed to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse through concerted federal, state, and local efforts.
