A late-night walk in Chicago's South Chicago neighborhood turned violent early Friday when a 15-year-old boy was shot in the right leg, authorities said. The shooting happened around 12:29 a.m. in the 2900 block of East 91st Street. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. No arrests have been made.
What the police say
According to Fox 32 Chicago, the teen told police he noticed a group of unknown males across the street shortly before someone in the group pulled out a gun and opened fire. Officers placed the time of the shooting at approximately 12:29 a.m., and Area Two detectives are leading the investigation. The Chicago Police Department did not immediately release suspect descriptions, the outlet reported.
Confirmation and hospital status
Local media reports matched the police account of the incident. CBS Chicago reported that the 15-year-old was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital and listed in good condition. At the same time, a Chicago Police Department statement published by the Chicago Sun-Times noted that no one was in custody as detectives continued their work at the scene.
Shootings across the city
This was one of several shootings reported across Chicago on Christmas night, adding to an already grim overnight tally. ABC7 Chicago reported that at least six people were shot citywide that night, including victims in Park Manor and other neighborhoods.
Context
Researchers at the University of Chicago Crime Lab say that overall violent crime in the city trended down in 2025, even as shootings remained heavily concentrated in a relatively small number of neighborhoods on the South and West Sides. The Crime Lab's analysis, along with the city's Violence Reduction Dashboard, is used to track those neighborhood-level disparities and guide intervention efforts aimed at reducing gun violence.
