A late-night shooting just off Civic Center turned a SoMa intersection into a crime scene yesterday, after an unidentified man was found lying in the roadway at Sixth and Natoma and later died from his injuries, according to police.
San Francisco officers on patrol discovered the adult victim at about 12:15 AM, saw that he had been shot, and began first aid until paramedics arrived. Despite efforts to treat him at the scene, he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released, and investigators have classified the case as a homicide.
As reported by SFGATE, the San Francisco Police Department said the SFPD Homicide Detail is leading the investigation into the killing.
The San Francisco Chronicle notes that the shooting scene is only a few blocks from Civic Center Station and City Hall, putting the crime uncomfortably close to some of downtown’s most prominent landmarks. No arrests had been announced as of the latest update, and detectives are asking anyone with information to step forward.
Witness Accounts And Scene
Residents were quick to start talking online. Local posts on neighborhood forums described hearing multiple gunshots shortly after midnight, followed by a heavy police presence in the area.
One thread on Reddit includes accounts from people who said they heard the gunfire and later saw Sixth and Natoma cordoned off as officers worked the scene.
How To Help The Investigation
Police are urging anyone who might have seen or heard something to contact the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411, beginning the message with “SFPD,” according to the department’s release as reported by SFGATE. The homicide unit continues to process evidence from the scene, and investigators say the case remains very much active.
