A tragic incident unfolded late Friday night on Interstate 12 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, leading to the untimely death of an unrestrained passenger following a two-vehicle collision. Louisiana State Police Troop L, responding to the crash reported at approximately 11:40 p.m., discovered that the collision involved a 2018 Ford Transit van and a 2015 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, the latter of which carried the now-deceased passenger.
The preliminary investigation conducted by the Louisiana State Police indicates the Ford Transit, for reasons that are still under investigation, collided with the rear of the Mercedes-Benz. The force of the impact was such that both vehicles got entangled, subsequently went off-road to the right, and came into contact with a tree. The passenger of the Mercedes-Benz, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both drivers, who were also not restrained by seatbelts, sustained injuries of varying degrees—the Mercedes-Benz driver with moderate injuries necessitating hospital treatment, and the Ford driver with minor injuries. The driver of the Ford received citations for Following Too Closely and other traffic-related offenses. As part of the ongoing inquiry, Troopers collected routine toxicology samples from both drivers for analysis, as reported by the Louisiana State Police.
The Louisiana State Police took this occasion to reinforce the critical nature of wearing a seatbelt. "Although not all crashes are survivable," they explained, "wearing your seatbelt drastically decreases your chance of injury or death during a crash." They also emphasized that obeying traffic laws and adhering to speed limits are simple precautions that can markedly increase road safety.
Trooper Marc Gremillion of the Public Affairs Section – Troop L provided the contact details for further information regarding the crash. The office can be reached at (985) 302-9272. This somber incident underscores the ongoing dialogue around roadway safety and preventive measures that authorities consistently advocate for to save lives, as per the Louisiana State Police.
