A tragic incident unfolded at Zion-Benton Township High School last week when a 17-year-old girl was critically injured after being stabbed by a classmate. According to the Zion Police Department, a fight between two teenage girls escalated to one stabbing the other. The victim was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries, as reported by CBS News Chicago.
The assailant reportedly fled the school campus shortly after the incident but was apprehended "a short time later," Zion police said. A school resource officer provided "critical information" that assisted in the suspect's swift arrest. In the wake of the stabbing, school officials took immediate precautionary measures, placing the school on code yellow, which typically involves locking doors and restricting outside activities. Despite the measures, the officials assure that there was no further threat to students and staff, explaining the situation as an "isolated incident," as per the communication sent to parents.
Details surrounding the motives for the attack remain unclarified as the investigation is ongoing. The school's prompt response, which included a code yellow alert, ensured that no additional students or staff were in harm's way, as confirmed by District 126 officials, when they informed parents about following "established safety protocols."
FOX 32 Chicago obtained a statement from Deputy Chief Christopher Sweeting of the Zion Police Department, detailing that the suspect was arrested off campus without further incident and is cooperating with the investigators. There has been a consistent emphasis from the authorities on the isolated nature of this occurrence, and repeated assurances have been communicated that no ongoing threat exists to those associated with the school.
