On the night of Saturday, January 24, a potentially catastrophic situation was narrowly avoided in La Vergne thanks to the alertness of local police officers. According to a social media post by the La Vergne Police Department, officers spotted a vehicle on the wrong side of Murfreesboro Road shortly before 11 PM. The situation escalated when the driver showed signs of impaired consciousness, posing a substantial risk to public safety.
Police said an erratic driver initially failed to comply with a traffic stop and appeared to drift in and out of consciousness. Officers eventually detained the driver to prevent further danger. During the arrest, police discovered an unrestrained 5-year-old child in the back seat. Officers took the child to the police department for safety before releasing them to a relative, according to police.
Further inquiry by the officers revealed that the vehicle was equipped with an ignition interlock device, which was found to have been tampered with. This discovery suggested deliberate actions taken by the driver to bypass safety measures established due to previous offenses. The driver, upon medical evaluation, faced multiple charges, including a fifth offense for DUI, reckless endangerment, child abuse, neglect, and endangerment of a child aged eight years or less, resisting arrest, and operating a vehicle with a revoked license.
The severity of the charges reflects the gravity of driving under the influence, a point underscored by the La Vergne Police Department, which emphasized: "Driving under the influence is not just a poor decision — it’s a life-threatening one." Their message is clear and direct, urging the community to report dangerous driving and advising those impaired to refrain from getting behind the wheel, highlighting an unwavering commitment to community and child safety.
The bond for the arrested driver was set at $20,000. As the incident draws to a close, the La Vergne Police Department reminds us that such near-misses underscore the importance of vigilance on the road and the need for community involvement in reporting any signs of dangerous driving. Their dedicated work exemplifies an ongoing effort to protect citizens from the life-threatening risks posed by DUI.
