Boston Police have intensified their search for a suspect involved in a series of thefts that rattled City Hall late last year. According to an update from the Boston Police Department, they have identified 60-year-old Darrin O'Neil of Lowell as the individual responsible for multiple larcenies committed in December 2025.
After a detailed investigation by detectives from District A-1 (Downtown), O'Neil is facing several criminal complaints that include two counts of Larceny from a Building, two counts of Credit Card Fraud under $1,200, and is being termed a Common and Notorious Thief. This recent slew of charges follows O'Neil's arrest on December 27 for shoplifting, where he was caught with approximately $408 worth of stolen merchandise.
The trail of misdemeanors began at 1 City Hall Plaza when O'Neil reportedly lifted a wallet and then fraudulently used the credit cards contained within. The same kind of illegal activity was reported again, cementing a pattern of deceitful behavior. These events led up to his apprehension outside of Dick's House of Sport at 760 Boylston Street, after a report of a Larceny in Progress was made to police officers.
Beyond the immediate charges, O'Neil is apparently no stranger to the inside of a courtroom. The authorities have revealed that he also had seven active warrants for his arrest for various other offences, including Four Counts of Larceny from a Building, Two Counts of Larceny of a Credit Card, Three Counts of Receiving Stolen Property under $1,200, and other theft-related infractions. His lengthy rap sheet serves as a testament to a career in petty crime.
Previously, in efforts to close in on the suspect, Boston Police reached out to the public for assistance, releasing surveillance footage of a male donning a brown beanie, dark jacket, sweatpants, and a blue mask, as reported by Hoodline. They urged anyone with information or additional footage of the suspect to come forward and contact the District A-1 detectives or submit tips through the CrimeStoppers Tip Line and platform.
As the case against O'Neil continues to develop, Boston Police underline the significance of community vigilance and cooperation in aiding them to tackle such crimes. His arraignment is expected to take place at the Boston Municipal Court, where the full extent of his alleged misdemeanors will be addressed.
