A house fire in Brighton, Tennessee, claimed the life of one individual, as confirmed by the Brighton Fire Department. The tragic event unfolded on the morning of Saturday, with emergency units dispatched around 11 a.m. to a residence in the 100 block of Daphne Cove. According to reports from Action News 5, the arriving crews, which included firefighters from Atoka, Munford, Three Star Volunteer, and Tipton County departments, were initially hindered by the intensity of the flames, which consumed approximately half of the single-story family home.
Once the fire was subdued, firefighters were able to enter the building and found a victim inside, who was pronounced dead at the scene. While dealing with the fire conditions that were advanced, crews had a challenging time locating any occupants during the initial search, as reported by FOX13 Memphis. The identity of the deceased person has not been released.
The community is grappling with the aftermath of the loss. Neighbor Donna Green lamented to WREG, "I couldn't believe it because it wasn't, it was so fast." Green, who had resided adjacent to the home for nearly three decades, shared her interactions with the victim, saying, "We were talking about how old we are. And she said, 'Well, I don't know. How old are you?' And I said 'well I'm 83. She said well I'm 83.' And I didn't know she was that old."
In a social media post from Brighton Fire Chief Clay Short, which was obtained by the aforementioned WREG, he expressed his condolences to the family of the victim and gratitude towards the mutual aid partners who provided their assistance in controlling the fire. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, and there were no other injuries reported. Brighton fire officials have used this opportunity to remind residents about the importance of maintaining working smoke detectors in their homes, offering assistance to those who might not have one. For needing a working smoke detector, residents should reach out to their local fire department, which may have free options available.
