A tragic incident occurred at Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island, where a Canadian man lost his life after experiencing distress while snorkeling. The Martin County Sheriff's Office, along with local fire rescue and police departments, responded to the emergency after the man was reported to be in distress around 11:50 a.m., WPBF reports.
The victim, identified as Assaf Golan, 51, from Côte-Saint-Luc, Quebec, was found roughly 40-50 yards offshore by rescue personnel who then swam out to retrieve him, he was subsequently pronounced dead at Jupiter Medical Center despite efforts to resuscitate him, which included CPR and advanced life support during and after his rescue from rough surf conditions The Martin County Fire Rescue stated that initial reports indicated Golan was half a mile offshore, but several crew members were able to locate him closer to land, although they still faced the challenge brought on by the rough surf.
According to an incident report from MCSO obtained by CBS12, the victim was snorkeling prior to the incident and was seen in distress due to rough water conditions when deputies and Jupiter Island Police Department officers, along with fire rescue personnel, were called to the scene and found Golan unconscious.
When the fire rescue members arrived, they quickly went into the water, reaching the man, who was then assisted by a lifeguard and another fire rescue member; they got him about 6 feet from shore and immediately initiated CPR, but despite these efforts, Golan was pronounced dead shortly after his transport to the Jupiter Medical Center, the Martin County Sheriff's Office identified the 50-year-old man as Assaf Golan and confirmed that his family said he had been snorkeling before the distressing event occurred.
The authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Golan's death.
