Chicago neighborhoods are grappling with a spate of commercial burglaries, as groups of unknown offenders target local businesses with brazen break-ins. Authorities have issued a business alert across multiple districts, including Lake View East, Lincoln Park, Brighton Park, Armour Square, Rogers Park, West Town, Logan Square, and Uptown, highlighting a recent uptick in such criminal activity.
Details shared by the Chicago Police Department describe a methodical MO where offenders break glass doors or windows with sledgehammers and pry bars to gain entry into establishments. Once inside, they swiftly pilfer goods ranging from cash and ATMs to registers and other merchandise, before making their getaway in a waiting vehicle. The incidents have occurred in quick succession, all taking place in the early hours of the morning.
A total of eleven incidents have been documented so far. Specific locations and times indicate the burglars hitting two sites on the 2300 block of N. Clark on January 12, 2026 at 3 a.m., and another pair of entries on the 2600 block of W. 39th Pl. and the 4500 block of S. Archer around 3:22 a.m. and 3:29 a.m. respectively on the same day. Additional burglaries followed in Brighton Park, Armour Square, and Rogers Park, concluding with three most recent occurrences reported on January 24th in West Town, Logan Square, and Uptown.
Authorities are on the lookout for 4 to 7 individuals wearing black ski masks, black hooded sweatshirts, and black pants, all concealed to obscure identity and intent. In an effort to prevent further incidents, the department urges business owners to maintain well-lit perimeters and ensure all potential entry points are secure and in good repair, moreover, they recommend swift action to fix any security breaches and to report any suspicious activities without delay. A snippet of video footage has been made public in hopes of aiding the capture of the perpetrators.
For those in possession of video surveillance, the police emphasize the importance of preserving a copy of any incident for detectives to review. It's also advised to obtain contact information from any witnesses without attempting to pursue the suspected assailants. In the unfortunate event of victimization, the key is to avoid tampering with the crime scene and to contact police immediately. Community members are advised to always dial 9-1-1 and stay on scene when possible to assist with investigations.
