Residents and business owners across the Edgewater, Uptown, and West Ridge neighborhoods are on high alert following a series of recent burglaries targeting local establishments. In a spate of incidents vividly detailed in a Chicago Police Department report, businesses within the 20th (Lincoln) and 24th (Rogers Park) Districts have suffered forcible entries, with unknown assailants smashing or forcing the front doors to gain access.
Since the beginning of December, multiple locations have been hit, their cash registers and U.S. currency stolen by a perpetrator wielding a blunt object to break in. Notably, the 6300 block of N. Claremont was violated on January 9, 2026, between the still-dark hours of 3 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Similarly affected, the 6300 block of N. Artesian saw a breach on January 7 at 4:32 a.m., while the 1100 block of W. Argyle experienced a trio of unwanted visitations, including a December 14, 2025, trespass at 2:54 a.m., as well as January 2nd incidents at 5:28 a.m. and 5:38 a.m.
The Chicago Police Department has circulated a description of the suspect—an African American male in his late teens to mid-twenties, noted for his black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, black shoes, black face mask, and gloves. Community members are urged to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious activity, particularly individuals loitering potentially with ill intent.
In the event of an encounter with the suspect, the advisory recommends calm and immediate contact with law enforcement. Victims are advised not to touch anything before police arrival to preserve evidence. “If approached by a witness to an incident,” the report cautions, “request they remain on the scene when possible or obtain contact information.” In a plea for public cooperation, business owners and residents are being asked to call 911 immediately with detailed information if they witness any crime in progress.
