A teen was killed and a family member wounded Wednesday afternoon in Cicero after what police describe as an attempted robbery tied to a social media marketplace sale. Gunfire broke out around 3:20 p.m. in the 1300 block of South 58th Avenue, triggering a swift response from Cicero officers.
What Police Say Happened
According to Cicero police, two teens had arranged an online sale, but the deal collapsed, and a struggle started as the seller walked away. A relative who had driven the seller to the meetup got out of a car and was shot twice. That relative then pulled out a gun and fired back, hitting the alleged robber.
The teen suspected of trying to rob the seller later showed up at a hospital and died from his injuries, CBS Chicago reported.
Where The Teens Were Taken
Police said the seller's relative was transported to Loyola University Medical Center, where their condition was stabilized. The other teen arrived later at Rush Oak Park Hospital and was pronounced dead. Police identified both hospitals during the initial briefing and are continuing to work with investigators.
Ongoing Investigation And Safety Reminder
Cicero police say the investigation is still active and are urging residents who meet strangers through online marketplaces to complete transactions at the Cicero police station for added safety. They also asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators, according to CBS Chicago. Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, as detectives continue to interview witnesses and process the scene.
