A Deerfield man is behind bars after investigators say they uncovered dozens of child pornography images and videos on electronic devices seized from his home, including material that allegedly shows victims as young as toddlers. Authorities have charged 49-year-old Rami M. Gabriel with ten felony counts of possession of child pornography, and he is being held at the Lake County Jail in Waukegan while the investigation continues. Detectives say more charges could still be coming.
Investigation began with a social-media tip
According to investigators, the case started when a social media provider flagged suspected child sexual abuse material and passed along a tip to law enforcement. Lake County sheriff's detectives traced the activity to a residence in the 400 block of Jonquil Terrace in Deerfield. On Thursday, they executed a search warrant at the home with help from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and Deerfield police, and used electronic detection K9s to sweep for devices, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
What detectives say they found
During the search, detectives seized multiple electronic devices that allegedly contained dozens of images and videos of child sexual abuse, investigators said. They also say they recovered online messages in which Gabriel discussed forcibly sexually assaulting victims and expressed a sexual interest in children. "The crimes uncovered in this investigation are deeply disturbing and represent the worst kind of exploitation of children," Sheriff John D. Idleburg said in a statement, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
Charges and next steps
The Lake County State’s Attorney has approved ten counts of Possession of Child Pornography, class 2 felonies, against Gabriel, and prosecutors say they expect to seek additional charges as the case develops. The state’s attorney's office plans to file a petition to detain Gabriel while he awaits trial, and court records show he remains held at the Lake County Jail in Waukegan, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
