
In Martin County, Florida, 21-year-old Thalia Jacqueline James is facing charges of grand theft and fraudulent property acquisition under $20,000. The Daytona Beach resident was arrested in connection with a bank phone scam that reportedly defrauded a local victim of $1,700, according to NBC Miami.
James, who turned herself in to authorities, appeared unconcerned during her arrest, with bodycam footage showing her laughing afterward. Investigators spent weeks tracing the fraudulent $1,700 transaction and confirmed that the stolen funds were deposited into and spent from James’ bank account. She has not provided information regarding any potential accomplices, as per CBS12.
James is being held in the Martin County Jail with a bond set at $10,000. Authorities note that over the past two years, more than $12 million has been lost to fraud in Martin County.
