An employee of Decatur County Schools has been placed on administrative leave following criminal charges of a severe nature. WSMV reported that the school district was informed by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office about the charges filed against the employee, whose identity was initially withheld.
Further details emerged when an official statement identified the individual as Allen Maxwell, a physical education teacher at Decaturville Elementary School. According to WKRN, Maxwell faces charges including one count of child rape. The district has barred the accused from all campuses and from contacting students or staff, ensuring that the safety of the school community remains a priority.
Decatur County Schools has affirmed their full cooperation with law enforcement, conducting their own review in line with state law and school policies. "Our focus at this time is on the safety of our students, staff, and school community," the school district communicated in a Facebook post. They've also promised support and counseling resources, especially focused at Decaturville Elementary and Riverside High School, as noted by WKRN.
The investigation led by the Decatur County Sheriff's Office prompted immediate action, paralleled by a concerted effort from the 24th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. A warrant was obtained, and Maxwell was taken into custody at his Parsons home without incident. NewsChannel 5 noted that as the investigation proceeds, additional information is anticipated to be released.
While the nature of these allegations sends ripples through the community, officials urge anyone with further information or those who believe they may be a victim to come forward and contact the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office or the 24th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
