A Deltona woman says a TikTok-driven door kick stunt ended with her beloved Yorkshire terrier dead, and she wants the teenagers involved to be held responsible. She says a group of teens kicked in her front door, sending her dog bolting outside, where the small terrier was later struck and killed by a vehicle. After what the family felt was a slow start, authorities now say they have revisited the case and are moving toward criminal charges.
According to WESH, the chaos unfolded in December on Tiburon Lane in Deltona, where owner Dissany Cid lived with her three-year-old Yorkie, Spookie. Cid told the station her Ring doorbell camera was not working the night the teens allegedly kicked in the door, which meant investigators had little video evidence to review. In the confusion, Spookie ran out of the house and was later found dead after being hit by a car.
FOX 8 reports the Volusia County Sheriff's Office says deputies have identified a person of interest and recently took a second look at the investigation. Officials now say they are pursuing charges, though they have not yet said what those charges will be. The sheriff's office has previously warned residents about the so-called door kick challenge on social media, and Cid told the outlet she hopes any consequences lean toward community service rather than a felony that could ruin a teenager's life.
How the door kick trend spread
Law enforcement agencies across the country have flagged similar door kick videos as dangerous and potentially criminal. Coverage from NBC New York shows departments urging parents to talk with teens about viral pranks, warning that participants can face charges and that homeowners should not chase suspects down the street. Police say the stunt can be mistaken for a real home invasion and has already led to property damage and emotional fallout in multiple communities.
Owner wants accountability
Cid told reporters, "It's devastating... I feel like I failed him," and later said she need closure, according to WESH. She said she is not focused on the broken door and instead wants consequences that reflect the loss of her pet. Cid has continued pressing detectives to revisit the investigation, and for her family the question now is whether a criminal case will bring any sense of justice.
Legal and enforcement questions
Officials have not released the specific charges they plan to file, FOX 8 Live reports. In other jurisdictions, law enforcement has said participants in similar stunts could face vandalism, trespass or related counts, and police warn homeowners not to take matters into their own hands, according to Fox News. Detectives say documentation, such as video, and witness tips are crucial when physical evidence is limited.
The investigation in Deltona remains ongoing, and the family says it is hoping a legal outcome will offer some closure.
