A 2 a.m. break-in at a Mr. Submarine sandwich shop in Downers Grove turned into a two-car highway chase early Monday, ending with four people in custody and two more still on the run as morning approached, according to police.

Officers said they saw multiple people commit a burglary at the Mr. Submarine on Ogden Avenue at about 2 a.m., according to CBS Chicago. Two vehicles sped away from the scene and led officers toward Interstate 355.

The specific shop hit in the overnight break-in was the Mr. Submarine at 1322 Ogden Ave., Downers Grove police told Patch. What started as a smash-and-grab quickly became a multi-agency search stretching into the next day.

How the stops and arrests unfolded

Police stopped the first vehicle near Ogden Avenue and Interstate 355, where two women were taken into custody, according to ABC7 Chicago. Officers said the second vehicle continued south on I-355 before stopping near Maple Avenue and I-355.

At that second stop, four people got out of the vehicle and ran, police told ABC7 Chicago. After a short foot chase, two men were caught and taken into custody while two others managed to get away on foot.

Deputy Chief Jim McGreal told Patch that officers from Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and other DuPage County agencies searched the surrounding area but had not located the two remaining suspects as of midday.

Police asked anyone who sees suspicious activity in the area to call 911.

Background: commercial break-ins in the area

This latest overnight break-in fits into a broader pattern along the Ogden Avenue corridor. In April 2025, Downers Grove police were investigating roughly 20 commercial burglaries across the Butterfield Road and Ogden Avenue corridors, which led to increased patrols and outreach to local businesses, the Daily Herald reported.

As of publication, no charges had been announced against the four people taken into custody, according to CBS Chicago. Downers Grove police and partner agencies say the investigation is ongoing and are urging anyone with information or tips to contact local authorities.
