Commuters in Orange County can expect extended travel disruptions as the Interstate 85 South exit ramp to I-40 East (Exit 163) remains closed. Originally scheduled for a short-term closure, the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has extended it until Friday to complete necessary drainage work, weather permitting.
The drainage work, originally scheduled from Tuesday at 4 a.m. to January 22 at 4 a.m., has been extended due to unforeseen delays. Drivers are advised to use a detour via Exit 161 (U.S. 70 East) to access I-40 East.
NCDOT advises travelers to plan ahead, stay alert, and follow all posted traffic signs as work continues. The guidance is intended to ensure safety while the department completes the necessary drainage project to maintain North Carolina’s roads.
