A fire broke out at Cook Brothers Funeral Directors and Cremations in Fairburn on a recent Sunday afternoon, requiring several hours of firefighting to bring it under control. The fire, which reportedly began at the rear of the building located at 268 NW Broad Street, was first reported at 1:25 p.m., according to Atlanta News First.
Owner Pastor Tamarkus Cook and his cousin entered the burning building in an effort to retrieve the remains under their care. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are ongoing.
Cook's cousin, Blake Cook, sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and is receiving treatment at Grady Hospital. An online fundraiser has been established to assist with his medical expenses, with donations accepted through a link provided by the family business, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta.
Cook told FOX5 Atlanta that with the support of their families and community, they plan to recover. The full extent of the damage and its impact on ongoing services is still being assessed, but the business remains committed to continuing operations.
