Fort Lauderdale has launched a new traffic safety initiative aimed at addressing aggressive driving, led by local law enforcement. The program, known as Operation Fast and Furious, is supported by a $51,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation and focuses on reducing dangerous driving behaviors on city streets.
The Fort Lauderdale City Commission approved the funding for the initiative last Tuesday. As part of the program, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department will target aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, unsafe lane changes, and violations of traffic laws, which are frequently cited as contributing factors in serious crashes and fatalities. In a statement released by the City of Fort Lauderdale, Mayor Dean Trantalis said the goal of Operation Fast and Furious is to improve roadway safety.
The initiative includes increased enforcement in areas identified as high-risk for aggressive driving, particularly during nighttime hours when speeding violations are more common. Grant funding will be used to purchase handheld speed radar devices to support enforcement efforts, along with the deployment of a mobile speed radar trailer in areas with higher rates of aggressive driving.
The initiative also includes a public education component. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department plans to share traffic safety information in English, Spanish, and Creole at community events and through social media. City Manager Rickelle Williams said the program combines enforcement with public education to promote roadway safety for residents, visitors, and others who travel through the city.

He stated that increased enforcement is aimed at slowing drivers and encouraging safer driving practices. City officials said the program is designed to combine enforcement and education to address traffic safety concerns across Fort Lauderdale.
