The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting an inquiry into a deadly officer-involved shooting that transpired in Chamblee. Travis Damonta Harris, 29, lost his life during the altercation with law enforcement. The incident unfolded at a Walmart on Chamblee Tucker Road in the afternoon hours on January 15, as per the GBI announcement.
Reportedly serving in an off-duty capacity, a Chamblee Police Department (CPD) officer was notified by Walmart Loss Prevention about a suspected shoplifter, later identified as Harris. With Harris allegedly armed and not cooperating, a physical struggle ensued, during which he discharged his weapon, fortunately not striking any of the officers. The sequence of events led Harris to flee the premises and head towards a nearby apartment complex.
After a brief pursuit, officers engaged with Harris in the parking lot of the complex. Despite the police issuing commands for Harris to drop his firearm, he continued advancing towards an officer with the weapon in hand. This prompted the officers to fire multiple shots, which resulted in Harris being fatally struck. Subsequent attempts to provide medical aid were unsuccessful, with Harris being declared dead at the scene by emergency services.
The GBI will finalize its investigation, after which its findings will be submitted to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
