A fire broke out at a home on Greystone Circle in Hiram, but the quick actions of Hiram City Councilwoman Melissa Bayardelle helped prevent injuries to the sleeping occupants. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Bayardelle noticed the flames while leaving her own home and immediately alerted Isaiah Richerson and Dalasia Mitchell, who were inside.
Bayardelle recounted that she banged on the door, which was unlocked, and entered the home, shouting to wake the occupants. She alerted Isaiah Richerson and Dalasia Mitchell that their house was on fire. A neighbor also entered the burning home to rescue the couple’s cat, King, and all three escaped safely.
Following the fire, Bayardelle and Councilwoman Tiffany Carroll have been assisting in gathering clothing and essential items for Richerson and Mitchell, who received support from members of the Hiram community, as per Atlanta News First.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The blaze was strong enough to warp the siding of a nearby house, and while New Year’s fireworks have been mentioned as a possible factor, this has not been confirmed. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by the city to assist the couple.
