State Representative Tim O'Brien is pushing for transparency in real estate fees. His latest measure, House Bill 1252, has passed the Indiana House and targets referral compensation practices among brokerages.

A real estate agent himself, O'Brien has become a paladin of property purchase protections. "As a real estate agent myself, I fully support the broader push in the industry toward more transparency and consumer protections in these types of deals," O'Brien said, according to the Indiana House Republicans' official site. The bill demands that brokerages come clean whenever they pocket a fee for sending a client to another company.

This isn’t O'Brien’s first effort. Last year, he co-authored legislation to regulate Hoosier housing practices. The law protected earnest money by placing it in a trust and clarified restrictions for homebuyers. It also required managing brokers to have at least three years of licensure and a passing exam.

"The real estate market can experience growth and improved affordability by giving consumers the tools they need to make truly informed decisions. I will continue to support legislation that creates a more even playing field for Hoosier homebuyers," O'Brien stated, according to the Indiana House Republicans' official site.
