On Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Public Policy unanimously passed a bill to ban the sale of vaping products from foreign adversaries, including China, in Indiana. Authored by State Sen. Ron Alting of Lafayette, Senate Bill 185 aims to protect Hoosiers from potentially harmful substances. The legislation comes amid rising concerns about illegal vaping products entering the country.
According to Indiana Senate Republicans, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expressed concern that these products often contain illegal chemicals banned in China but shipped to the United States. State Sen. Ron Alting cited this in support of the bill, noting, "Not only do these products have illegal chemicals in them – China bans them for their own citizens, but allows the products to be sent to the United States. That's why I've partnered with the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission to ban these products from China and other foreign adversaries." He added that he is working with the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission to enforce the proposed ban.
Senate Bill 185 now moves to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further review. Alting has invited constituents from District 22 to share their questions and comments, either through the "Contact Me" form on his official Senate website or by calling 800-382-9467.
