Indiana State Senator Andrea Hunley has announced she will not seek reelection. Hunley, who represents the Indianapolis area and serves as Democratic Assistant Leader in the state Senate, was first elected in 2022, FOX59 reported. During her tenure, she focused on issues including child care affordability and access to housing.
Speculation has emerged that Hunley may run for Indianapolis mayor in 2027. In a statement, she said, “While my role may change, my commitment to this work will not,” WFYI reported. Current Mayor Joe Hogsett has indicated that his third term, which began in 2023, will be his last.
Indiana Capital Chronicle noted that Hunley’s decision adds to broader changes in the state legislature, with several House members and three other state senators also not seeking new terms. Colleagues highlighted her role as a voice for working families.
Hunley will complete her current term through November. The filing deadline for Indiana Senate and House seats is February 6.
