Wednesday next week, Janesville Transit will observe Transit Equity Day and honor Rosa Parks, whose refusal to give up her bus seat in 1955 sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. To mark what would have been her birthday, the front seat of every bus in Janesville will be reserved with signage and a flower, according to the City of Janesville.
Rosa Parks’ action on the Montgomery bus became a symbol of the fight against segregation and contributed to a U.S. Supreme Court decision declaring bus segregation unconstitutional. Janesville Transit said the dedication highlights its commitment to providing equitable service to all riders.
Transit Equity Day recognizes the importance of accessibility and fairness in public transportation. By participating, Janesville Transit is acknowledging Parks’ role in advancing civil rights and supporting ongoing efforts to maintain equitable public transit.
