As the new year began, the Kaua‘i Fire Department announced that, due to limited firecracker supplies from local retailers, they have temporarily suspended the issuance of online firecracker permits. The pause is related to inventory availability, not the county’s permit system or processing capacity.
Prior to the inventory issue, the Kaua‘i Fire Department directed applicants to the online portal for permit applications, which was available only through yesterday. The department recommended using a smartphone or tablet to make it easier to upload a photo ID. With the suspension of online permits, the process is currently on hold.
According to Kauai County, the process originally involved selecting the “Firecracker Permit” icon in the Kaua‘i Fire Department section of the County’s Online Portal. Approved permits were sent via email and required validation at the Fire Department’s Headquarters. Payments could be made online or in person, with in-person payments accepted by cash or check payable to the Director of Finance. Assistance was available for individuals without online access or a printer.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department annually reminds the public that fireworks use must be limited to private property between 9 p.m. yesterday and 1 a.m. today. Non-aerial fireworks, such as snakes, sparklers, or ground spinners, do not require a permit but are not allowed on public property, including parks or sidewalks. Fire officials also note that aerial luminaries, including flying lanterns, are prohibited statewide under HRS 132-19.
Following the suspension of online permit applications, the Kaua‘i Fire Department emphasizes that safety continues to be the primary focus. Individuals using firecrackers are advised to follow all safety guidelines and supervise any children present. Questions regarding fire safety or permit applications can be directed to the Fire Prevention Bureau at 808-241-4985.
