In a humble yet impactful gesture, State Rep. Garrett Bascom has put forward a resolution with the intent to pay homage to two local soldiers who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. If passed, House Concurrent Resolution 5 would mean two bridges in Lawrenceburg are to be renamed to honor the memory of the fallen servicemen, Lary D. Fogle and Thomas G. Denning, who both hailed from the city and graduated together from Lawrenceburg Consolidated High School in 1965.
According to information acquired by Indiana House Republicans, these men demonstrated unmistakable valor with Denning having served as a Lance Cpl. in the U.S. Marine Corps and being decorated with two Purple Hearts. Pvt. Fogle, serving as an Army airborne paratrooper, was awarded the Bronze Star along with the Purple Heart posthumously. While leading an assault, he was killed, and Fogle was known as the first resident from Dearborn County to be claimed by the conflict, perishing at just 18 years of age.
State Rep. Bascom recognized the gravity of their sacrifice, saying, "These two hometown heroes showed their dedication to our country and its ideals, giving everything they had in their service." He believes that this proposed act of remembrance serves not only as a tribute to Fogle and Denning but also as a lasting reminder to Lawrenceburg's citizens of the heavy price paid for the nation's freedoms and security, as noted by the same press release.
The renamings would designate the eastbound bridges on U.S. Highway 50 over Tanners Creek as the "Lary D. Fogle Memorial Bridge" and the westbound flyover bridge on U.S. Highway 50 in Lawrenceburg as the "Thomas G. Denning Memorial Bridge", as reported by the Indiana House Republicans. Moving forward from the House Roads and Transportation Committee, the resolution now approaches the House floor for further contemplation.
