A 43-year-old man's life came to a tragic and abrupt end on a South Side street late Sunday night, in what police are treating as a drive-by shooting incident. Taking place on the 800 block of West Garfield Boulevard, within the New City neighborhood's confines, the victim was reportedly standing outside when a white SUV approached him just before 10 p.m., according to statements obtained by WGN-TV.
The unknown assailant, sheltered within the confines of their vehicle, displayed a gun and proceeded to open fire, striking the victim in the abdomen. In the aftermath of the shooting, as the man sought sanctuary and assistance, he saw a bus, managing to ask the bus driver for help. The driver called 911, which initiated a swift yet fruitless effort to save the man's life. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital as the reality of the violence cemented itself into the memories of the community.
In the wake of the incident, authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the shooter or shooters remain unidentified and at large. The Chicago Police Department has disclosed that no one is in custody, and the case has been turned over to area detectives who are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the homicide, as reported by WGN-TV.
Further details shared by CBS News Chicago placed the time of the incident at precisely 9:52 p.m. The location given was near Halsted Street, on the fringes of the Back of the Yards and Englewood neighborhoods. The victim, after being shot, flagged down a Chicago Transit Authority bus driver, who helped him call 911. He was later transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Even as morning dawned, with detectives piecing together the scant clues left behind, the perpetrator had evaded capture, their whereabouts as unknown as the motive behind the shooting.
