Atlanta's Mayor Andre Dickens is diving into his second term with a full slate of inaugural events, emphasizing community service and calls for unity. From today to January 5, the city will mark the start of the Mayor's follow-up chapter with a series of activities aimed at bolstering the spirit of Atlanta under the mission "Moving Atlanta Forward." A statement obtained by Atlanta's official government website outlines the message that the Mayor intends to share: "This weekend is a celebration of service, unity, faith, and our shared commitment to moving Atlanta forward. This moment belongs to all of us."
The kickoff, ATL Cares! Day of Service will involve Mayor Dickens, Atlanta City Council President-Elect Marci Collier-Overstreet, and other dignitaries, as well as partners from Amazon and various community organizations to lead 61 service projects across Atlanta neighborhoods. According to the government release, these projects include work with youth, park conservation, cultural beautification, and engagement with senior citizens, culminating in an appreciation party. Mayor Dickens will deliver remarks today, at the C.T. Martin Natatorium, as part of the day's celebrations.
Tomorrow, an Interfaith Service titled "The Spirit of Atlanta" aims to broadcast the city's rich religious diversity and commitment to faith-based communities. Reverend Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Soumaya Khalifa of the Islamic Speakers Bureau, and Rabbi Ellen Nemhauser of Interfaith Atlanta will join the Mayor in a televised event, featuring a melange of inspirational messages and cultural performances. Residents can tune in to WSB-TV or stream the one-hour program online.
The culmination of the Inauguration Week will be the formal swearing-in ceremony of Mayor Dickens and other elected city officials set to take place on Monday at Georgia State University's Convocation Hall. The public swearing-in will formally usher in the officials' second terms, marking a continued path towards a future that Mayor Dickens envisions as "stronger, more connected and equitable." Media interested in attending any aforementioned events must RSVP to secure credentials.
