Poleo carries over 25 years of seasoned expertise spanning journalism, public affairs, crisis communications, and media relations within government sectors. "Helena is a proven communications leader with deep experience in government, crisis response, and in the media," Reyes stated as per the City of Miami website. In a role that is expected to distinctly shape public interchange, her extensive background will play a pivotal role in how the City plans to more effectively engage with its community.
In the past, Poleo has covered an array of beats from politics to immigration, contributing to both English and Spanish media outlets. Her transition into public service includes serving as Press Director under the tenure of former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and establishing the Public Information Department for the City of Doral. These roles, according to the City of Miami's official announcement, have thoroughly prepped her for the City's communication endeavors during standard and high-stakes situations.

A Venezuela native and an alumnus of Florida International University’s School of Journalism, Poleo graduated magna cum laude and also holds a certificate in Women in Leadership from Cornell University. In her new role, she will oversee media relations, strategic messaging, and public information operations for Miami.
