A man was arrested on charges after a stabbing incident on South Beach that left another man severely wounded last year, as per Miami-Dade police records. The accused, 24-year-old Jack Daniel Gutierrez, was captured Thursday night following weeks of meticulous searching and efforts by local law enforcement which involved combing city cameras and distributing a flyer with surveillance footage to the public, according to the Miami Herald.
The incident unfolded when an unnamed man, during a leisurely beach stroll, sat down near a lifeguard tower on the sands of Miami Beach. Gutierrez approached the man and inquired about a cigarette, and after being told the man did not smoke, he then asked to use the man's cellphone. Following the refusal, police say Gutierrez, armed with "a knife or bladed weapon," attacked the man, leaving him with a significant injury. Gutierrez is facing one count of aggravated battery with a weapon causing great bodily harm for the assault that occurred late last year. After the victim managed to fight back during the assault, he had to apply pressure to a puncture wound on his neck, ultimately resulting in him using a hands-free Siri application to contact emergency services. The Miami Beach Police issued a "be-on-the-lookout" alert which subsequent led to Gutierrez's arrest and his positive identification by the victim in a photo lineup, as detailed in the police reports, as mentioned on Local10.
While the direct motive for Gutierrez's attack remains undefined, records indicate that he was on probation for an unrelated weapons charge at the time of the stabbing Local10 reported. Following his arrest, Gutierrez was detained without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and he anticipates his upcoming court appearance on Monday. The man who was on the receiving end of the attack received treatment for his injuries at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center and was seen with a "large laceration along [his] neck from ear to ear," as the police documented on Miami Herald.
