The United States is approaching its 250th anniversary, with initiatives focused on community participation. According to Miami-Dade County, Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis has introduced the "Flags Across Miami-Dade" program, which encourages the display of American flags throughout local neighborhoods. The flags are intended to serve as visible representations of national heritage and the values associated with the country’s history.
Marking today’s launch, the Miami-Dade 250: We Are America Celebration Advisory Committee met for the first time. The committee is responsible for guiding the county’s participation in the nationwide semiquincentennial celebrations. As part of this effort, Commissioner Milian Orbis’ program aims to reduce financial barriers that could limit participation, particularly for senior citizens and working families, enabling them to display American flags as a representation of civic engagement.
Commissioner Milian Orbis stated that the America 250 commemoration should extend beyond formal events and be visible throughout local communities. She emphasized incorporating the milestone into streets, homes, and neighborhoods. Through the distribution of flags, the initiative seeks to encourage participation at the household level and highlight the historical significance of the anniversary within everyday community settings.
Commissioner Milian Orbis stated that Miami-Dade County’s population includes many residents with immigrant backgrounds and experiences related to political repression. The initiative, which is being launched initially in District 6, has been presented to the advisory committee for consideration as a countywide program aimed at increasing civic participation. In remarks shared on the Miami-Dade website, Milian Orbis referenced her family’s experience emigrating from Cuba following the loss of their property under a communist government, describing how those experiences inform the significance the American flag holds for many families in the district.
As a member of the America 250 Advisory Committee, Commissioner Milian Orbis supports efforts to recognize the nation’s history and promote civic responsibility. The initiative also includes an educational focus, particularly aimed at younger residents, on the meaning of citizenship. In remarks published on the Miami-Dade County website, Milian Orbis described America 250 as an opportunity to highlight the responsibility of each generation to maintain and pass on established civic principles.
Additional information regarding the possible expansion of the Flags Across Miami-Dade initiative and opportunities for resident participation will be released as plans develop. Commissioner Milian Orbis and the advisory committee are currently working on outlining next steps to engage Miami-Dade County residents in activities related to the upcoming anniversary.
