A pelican became entangled in a fishing line and hook and was rescued by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews yesterday afternoon near Haulover Inlet. According to WSVN, beach workers noticed the bird struggling to swim and fly because of the fishing gear caught around its beak.
Ocean Rescue personnel, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the call and coordinated a rescue operation. The pelican was safely transferred from rescuers to firefighters at the scene, with assistance from the Coast Guard, as reported by the Miami Herald.
The incident took place near the 10300 block of Collins Avenue, where a pelican was brought onto a fire boat. Responders removed a fishing hook and line from the bird’s beak. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that the pelican displayed no signs of distress and was able to swim and fly away independently after the rescue.
