A quiet Morton Grove block turned into a crime scene early Sunday when a homeowner was shot after trying to stop two men from breaking into his car on the 7300-block of Palma Lane. Police say he survived the attack and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
What police say
According to the Morton Grove Police Department, the confrontation unfolded at about 2:45 a.m., when the resident spotted two men rifling through his parked vehicle and stepped outside to intervene. The suspects allegedly beat the homeowner, and one of them fired a single shot that hit the man in the leg before they bolted in a dark-colored sedan, ABC7 Chicago reports. Officers took the victim to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Police response and investigation
Officers from Morton Grove and neighboring Niles quickly locked down the area and gave the man first aid, including applying a tourniquet, before firefighters took him to the hospital, according to Patch. Witnesses told investigators they saw the two attackers speed off in a dark sedan. Detectives say details on the suspects and their vehicle have been pushed out to nearby agencies as they chase down leads. No arrests have been announced, and the case remains very much open.
Chief's warning
Morton Grove Police Chief Michael Weitzel is using the incident as a cautionary tale for residents tempted to confront would-be thieves on their own. He acknowledged that people have legal rights to defend their property, but warned that face-to-face showdowns can spiral quickly and violently. "Similarities in method do not, by themselves, establish that the same individuals were involved," Weitzel wrote in a letter to the community, urging neighbors to put personal safety first and call police instead of charging outside, according to Patch.
How this fits a wider pattern
Sunday's shooting is not an isolated scare. On Jan. 7, a different Morton Grove homeowner reportedly came under fire after confronting suspects who were breaking into a work van on Reba Street. Police say the suspects in that case fired four rounds at the resident and took off in a gray Genesis sedan with a stolen Illinois license plate, according to ABC7 Chicago. Both incidents remain under investigation by local authorities.
How to help
The Morton Grove Police Department is asking anyone who knows something about the Palma Lane shooting or the people involved to come forward. Tipsters can call the department's non-emergency line at 847-470-5200, leave an anonymous message on the tip hotline at 847-663-3828, or email detectives at [email protected], per the department's website at Morton Grove Police Department. Residents who have home-security or dash-cam footage from around 2:45 a.m. in the area are urged to share it with investigators, who say tips and video can be crucial in tracking down whoever pulled the trigger.
