On a South Shore block already marked by gun violence, Chicago police are searching for answers after a woman was found shot inside an apartment Tuesday evening.
Officers discovered the victim inside a unit in the 6700 block of South Crandon Avenue and she was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the mouth, police said. Authorities released few details and no arrests had been reported by Tuesday night.
According to CBS Chicago, officers responded around 6:42 p.m. and found the woman inside the apartment. Her age was not released, and police did not immediately say what may have led up to the shooting.
The Block's Recent History
The 6700 block of South Crandon Avenue has seen deadly violence before. In 2023, a 25-year-old woman was found shot on the same block and later died, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Reporting from the Chicago Sun-Times and other outlets has tracked a string of South Side shootings in recent years, a pattern that has left neighbors worried about safety in the area.
Investigators on the Case
Chicago police said Area 1 detectives are handling the investigation and that no arrests had been made as of Tuesday night, per CBS Chicago.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Bureau of Detectives, Area One, as investigators work to piece together what happened inside the South Shore apartment.
