Early this morning, a 28-year-old man was fatally shot at a home on Bonnacreek Drive, and now Metro Nashville Police homicide detectives are sifting through details to investigate a claim of self-defense. The incident, which left the man dead on the basement floor, occurred at approximately 2:50 a.m., prompting a response from Hermitage Precinct officers, as reported by the City of Nashville.
Upon their arrival, two brothers, Christian Felipe-Valdez, 18, and Erik Valdez-Martinez, 22 were detained for questioning, during which Valdez-Martinez claimed that the victim, who had been living in their basement, attacked him after returning home from a New Year's party under the influence; Felipe-Valdez subsequently shot the individual after they allegedly tried to seize his gun, and made the 911 call himself.
The narrative, as presented by the brothers, portrays a scenario dashed by fears and a perceived need for immediate action: Felipe-Valdez came to the aid of his brother and, in a claimed act of self-defense, ended another life. This justification for pulling the trigger, while seemingly simple, unravels a complex web that law enforcement must now untangle—the truth is rarely a straightforward path. As of now, the younger Valdez has been released after discussion with the District Attorney’s Office, as stated in the report by the City of Nashville.
Further complicating matters, Valdez-Martinez is entangled with the law beyond the shooting incident, as detectives discovered more than three pounds of methamphetamine and 21 grams of cocaine, leading to his arrest on drug charges, especially since he was on probation for a prior felony cocaine possession conviction, and his bond has been set at $155,000 by a judicial commissioner, authorities say efforts to locate the next of kin for the deceased are ongoing.
