The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued an Extreme Cold Warning and a Wind Advisory for parts of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The National Weather Service Wind Advisory is in effect from midnight Friday night through midnight CST Saturday night, while the Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect from midnight Friday night until 10 a.m. CST Sunday.
Forecast conditions include north winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Wind chill values may fall as low as 10 degrees in affected areas, including New Orleans, Laplace, Metairie, and Slidell. The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to these conditions may result in frostbite or hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
The National Weather Service Advisory also notes that strong winds could blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages. Residents are advised to wear layered clothing, including hats and gloves, when outdoors. Extended freezing temperatures may also lead to ruptured water pipes, and residents are encouraged to take protective measures such as wrapping pipes or allowing them to drip slowly. Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors.
Cold conditions are expected to continue through Sunday night, with frost possible and widespread frost anticipated Monday morning. Temperatures are forecast to moderate by Tuesday, with highs reaching the upper 60s. Residents are advised to use caution while driving, especially high-profile vehicles, due to strong winds.
