Two people killed in a New Year’s Day crash that followed a Tennessee Highway Patrol pursuit have now been publicly identified, bringing a somber bit of clarity to a chaotic early-morning scene in west Knoxville.
The Knox County Regional Forensic Center confirmed the victims as 35-year-old Ronald White and 21-year-old Da'Qasia Middleton after conducting autopsies and forensic comparisons. The collision happened in the early hours of Jan. 1 near Papermill Drive and Liberty Street in west Knoxville, shortly after a Tennessee Highway Patrol chase in the area.
How officials identified the victims
The Knox County Regional Forensic Center handled the autopsies and led the work to formally identify the two decedents. According to WBIR, center director Chris Thomas said White was identified through a fingerprint match, while Middleton was confirmed using a rapid-DNA comparison. The forensic team also coordinated closely with law enforcement so that relatives could be notified once the identities were verified.
What investigators say about the pursuit and crash
Authorities say the wreck occurred during a Tennessee Highway Patrol pursuit. The Knoxville Police Department has emphasized that its officers were not part of the chase itself and only stepped in afterward to manage traffic around the crash scene. Troopers investigated the area and confirmed two fatalities, and the collision snarled early-morning traffic along Papermill Drive as the sun came up on the first day of 2026. WVLT reported that KPD officials said the Tennessee Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.
Investigation remains open
Per WBIR, a Tennessee Highway Patrol spokeswoman said the investigation is still active, which means additional details are not being released for now. No arrests or charges directly tied to the crash have been made public. Troopers continue their crash reconstruction work and evidence collection, while the Knox County Regional Forensic Center’s autopsy findings are being folded into the broader inquiry.
