On the frontlines of emergency response, the calming voice at the end of a 911 call is often the anchor for those in crisis. Recently, ABC15 highlighted how these professionals in Phoenix find solace in the companionship of therapy dogs during stressful shifts. "Ellie and Spirit are both keyed in to kind of recognize that and go and sit with them just to provide that comforting resource," Phoenix Police administrator Allie Edwards shared with ABC15.

Therapy dogs like Ellie provide brief comfort, but dispatchers face constant demands. According to the First Responders Foundation, they handle calls ranging from minor disturbances to serious emergencies, requiring both empathy and focus.

Despite their vital role, dispatchers often go unrecognized. “It's very gratifying knowing you're able to help somebody, even if you can't physically help them, you're still helping them,” dispatcher Emily Kuehnle told ABC15. Experts say recognition should include a supportive work environment and access to mental health resources.
