A plane crash at Provincetown Municipal Airport yesterday afternoon has resulted in the death of the pilot, the sole occupant of the Cessna 172N. The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. and led to an immediate closure of the airport. The Provincetown Fire Department quickly responded to the crash, which also caused a fire, now extinguished, as reported by WCVB.
The identity of the pilot has not been released, but the Massachusetts State Police confirmed that the pilot was attempting to successfully land the plane when it crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board is set to investigate to early conclude the cause of the accident.
After the crash, the Town of Provincetown issued a statement expressing gratitude toward the first responders and offering condolences to the pilot's family. "We thank the Provincetown Police and Fire departments and our mutual aid partners for their quick response to this incident," the statement, posted on Facebook, stated. "Our thoughts are with the pilot’s family," as Cape Cod Times further detailed.
Assistant Town Manager Dan Riviello has confirmed that the airport will remain closed until further notice. The investigation by the NTSB will encompass involvement from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Massachusetts State Police. Updates will continue as more information becomes available, and local authorities have asked the public to steer clear of the area at 176 Race Point Road during this time.
