On a recent Friday evening, a domestic disturbance in Chicago escalated into a violent confrontation when police arrived on the scene. A preliminary statement from the Chicago Police Department states that at around 7:49 p.m., officers from the 6th (Gresham) District were dispatched to the 7900 block of S. Ingleside. The call indicated an individual armed with a gun and a knife was engaged in a domestic disturbance.
Upon arrival, the situation quickly devolved; the armed individual, attempting to flee, discharged a weapon toward the officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The offending party sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was subsequently transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, serious but stable under police custody. A firearm was also found at the scene. At the same location, before the police intervention, a 23-year-old woman had been shot, suffering injuries to her right arm and receiving care at the same hospital mentioned in good condition, as reported by the department's communication.
Both officers involved in the shooting were taken to a local hospital for observation, and according to the department, they are listed in good condition. The aftermath of the shooting has activated the Investigative Response Team, and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability has launched a comprehensive investigation into the use of force, operating hand in hand with the Chicago Police.
Furthermore, the officers have been reassigned to routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days following the incident, while the investigations continue to ascertain the details and appropriateness of the force that was used. Circumstances around these events are still unfolding as the accountability office digs deeper with inquiries being directed to their attention at (312) 746-3609.
