Following a 911 call late Thursday night, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person in Fort Pierce, leading to the arrest of a Pompano Beach truck driver, 41-year-old Olson Jean. As deputies arrived at the scene near South Rock Road, behind a Pilot Truck Stop, they found Jean's semi-truck in a ditch, according to Local 10 News.
Upon further investigation, deputies say they found blood inside and outside the cab of the truck. Jean was initially taken into custody for resisting an officer without violence. However, by Saturday, detectives gathered enough evidence to also arrest him on charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of Wendy Moncion, a 32-year-old from Coconut Creek, as reported by CBS12 News.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro Jr. addressed the seriousness of the crime, saying, "This was a violent and senseless crime, and I want to commend the outstanding work of our Patrol Operations Bureau and Criminal Investigations Division for their relentless efforts in bringing this case forward." Del Toro's statement went on, "Their dedication and professionalism ensured that the individual responsible is being held accountable. Let this serve as a clear message, violent crime will not be tolerated in St. Lucie County, and we will pursue justice for victims and their families. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Ms. Moncion during this difficult time," as obtained by Local 10 News.
Jean remains incarcerated at the St. Lucie County Jail without bond; additional details regarding Moncion’s death have not been disclosed. St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information relating to the case to come forward. A press conference scheduled for Tuesday is expected to possibly reveal more about the ongoing investigation. Lauren Carter, a local resident, told CBS12 News, "Being so close to something that scary was a little concerning," reflecting community tensions as the case progresses.
