Passion Flour, the vegan patisserie that helped put the Maven District on the map for plant-based French pastries, will close its brick-and-mortar shop on Sunday, Feb. 1. Owner Jessica Davies said she and her son are moving out of state to join her partner, and the move prompted the decision to close. Davies plans to keep the brand alive by baking from a commercial kitchen after the move and shipping pastries to customers nationwide.
Owner Announces Closure And Family Move
Davies announced the shutdown on Instagram, then expanded on the decision in an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune. In a message to the paper, she wrote that "due to changes in my personal life, I’ll be moving out of state" and that "Because I’m so hands-on day to day, I’ve made the hard but intentional decision to close our brick-and-mortar." She told the paper she is already pricing commercial kitchen space near her new home and is working out shipping logistics to resume baking after the move.
A Decade Of Vegan French Pastries
Davies opened Passion Flour in 2015 and developed it into what the bakery calls the nation's first 100% plant-based French patisserie, with laminated croissants, macarons, and other French-style pastries on the menu. According to Passion Flour, the shop lists its Maven District location and hours and highlights its classically trained pastry roots and award-winning pastries.
Final Days, Customers And Local Reaction
After the announcement, Davies told The Salt Lake Tribune that people were already driving in from out of state, including one person who drove overnight from Denver, and that the Instagram post drew nearly 200 comments. Local vegan business owners also weighed in. "It's incredibly sad to see an institution like Passion Flour shutting its doors," Roxy Carlson of Buds and Monkeywrench told the paper. Until Feb. 1, the bakery is running an Instagram countdown highlighting a daily customer favorite with a 10% discount for shoppers who mention the post.
