On the first day of the new year, a routine walk near Lake Hodges turned perilous for a local couple as they found themselves swept away by a sudden flood. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the pair ventured into an area known for its low-water crossings, which was soon engulfed by rapidly rising waters, leading to an urgent rescue operation.
The incident, originally reported by the couple who wished to remain anonymous, occurred at around 8:10 AM yesterday, when they decided to return across the lake grounds only to be met by the swollen crossing, now a fast-moving conduit to the lake. It was during this attempt to cross on foot that the strong current took hold, pulling them off their feet and sending them towards the depths of Lake Hodges. After a struggle with the water, the husband emerged onto the shore and made his way to a nearby residence for help, leaving his wife to battle the current alone.
An ensuing search operation featured a collaboration of deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff's Station alongside Cal Fire and local fire agencies. In the heart of this teamwork, a San Diego Fire Rescue Helicopter made the pivotal discovery, locating the wife and lifting her to safety. As per the official report, both individuals were later reunited at the hospital, where they were observed to be in stable condition.
